Cross-Border Financial Planning: The Atwal Financial Story

Most financial advisory firms operate in one country. They understand one tax system, one set of regulations, one market. That is fine — until your financial life stops fitting neatly inside one country's borders.

For a growing number of people, it does not. Indian professionals who spent careers in the UK and are now returning home. British expats living in Goa or Delhi. NRIs managing investments and property across two jurisdictions. UK businesses expanding into India. These are not niche situations anymore — they are the reality for hundreds of thousands of people, and the financial complexity they bring is significant.

Atwal Financial was founded in 2008 specifically to serve this space. Not as a generalist firm that occasionally handles an overseas client, but as a dedicated UK-India cross-border financial planning practice built from the ground up around the needs of people whose financial lives span both countries.

    Why We Started

Ranjit Atwal, Founder of Atwal Financial, identified the problem early. Indian nationals returning from the UK were arriving back with UK pensions, UK investments, and UK tax obligations — and finding that advisors in India had no meaningful understanding of the UK regulatory framework. Advisors in the UK, meanwhile, had no understanding of FEMA, Indian income tax, or what it meant to become an Indian tax resident after decades abroad.

The result was bad advice. Transferred pension portfolios performing poorly. Compliance gaps that went unnoticed for years. Tax being paid twice when it should have been paid once — or not at all where treaty relief was available but never claimed.

Atwal Financial was the answer to that gap.

    What We Do Differently

We are not a technology platform. We are not an automated advisory service. We are advisers who sit down with clients — in person wherever possible — and take the time to understand their complete financial picture across both countries before making a single recommendation.

That approach matters in this space more than most. UK-India cross-border financial planning involves two tax systems, two regulatory frameworks, and decisions that interact with each other in ways that only become apparent when you understand both sides simultaneously. A decision that looks sensible from a UK perspective can create a serious problem under Indian tax law. A structure that works perfectly in India can trigger an unexpected HMRC liability.

We hold qualifications and maintain active expertise across both the UK and Indian frameworks — covering pension planning, DTAA relief, FEMA compliance, NRE and NRO account management, Indian ITR filing obligations, UK capital gains tax, inheritance planning, and business expansion between the two countries.

    Based Where Our Clients Are

Ranjit Atwal has been based in India for over a decade, with deep roots in both the UK financial industry — where he has held senior positions for over 30 years — and the Indian advisory landscape, where he is registered with IRDAI, PFRDA, and AMFI. That dual presence is not incidental. It is the foundation of everything we do.

Our clients are people for whom one country is not enough. We exist to make sure their financial planning is not either.
